“Are you ready, habibti?” Faruk whispers. It fills a silence never before heard in the market.

“Let’s do this.”

The crowd erupts. Music begins to play, led by the old man’s oud and small woman’s guzheng. Tanith has a hard time keeping the smile from her face. These precious moments with Faruk are more important than ever. Who knows if they’ll be able to access the data collector again? Tanith’s life may change completely after she is married to Jonas Meyer, maybe even after she leaves Libros.

Instead of pushing her fears away, she holds them close. They drive each step through the market, strengthening her resolve to savour every nanosecond of this event—her true wedding, the one belonging to her heart.

They reach their corner, now padded with every kind of flower Faruk could find in the data collector. The maazoon and priest await with a smile.

Tanith means every word of her vows, as if they come from flesh and blood and soul. Her ring, gold with feathers intricately carved into the metal, sits solid and heavy on her finger.

And when at long last Faruk kisses her, she finds he has stolen her trick! A coded message travels through her rendered skin and modelled splines, shooting at the speed of thought until finally her Neura synthesises it for her in her language.

Ai’ren—lover.

Their room is a rented suite above the market. Faruk never coded a hotel here, but the perfume seller arranged everything. The happy couple sit together by the window, sipping rose oolong cocktails by candlelight, watching dancers and artists entertain the crowd below.

Finally, they shut the curtains and undress. Tanith kept her promise to wear her actual shape and size, as honestly as she could make it.

It wasn’t hard. Sometimes mirrors lie, but this ancient recorder collects only the truth. She copied her body from this evening, freshly showered, just before putting on her Neura.

Faruk is a sight to behold. He is so tall, firmer in some places and softer in others than she expects, but this is all of him as accurately as he can estimate, after factoring in food and drink and afterparty fatigue, and Tanith loves every bit of it.

Besides, he is firm enough where it counts on a wedding night, and that’s all that matters now.

“I’m sorry we couldn’t do this for real,” she laments.

He tips her chin up. “This is real enough for me. Is it for you?”

“Absolutely.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

Tanith jolts awake. Her room is dark, but light seeps in around the edges of her curtains. She touches her Neura—still firmly on. Something else must have woken her up.

She takes a swig of water and flops back onto her pillow, running her arms and legs across cool sections of bedsheet. When she fell asleep, it was beside her true husband, after a good and thorough wedding night. Her body gets warm just thinking about returning to him. But she needs the bathroom first.

She washes her face and studies herself in the mirror while she pats dry. On a whim, she smiles.
